There is a song by Vickie Winans that says I’ve been lied on, cheated, talked about, mistreated. I’ve been used and scorned. I ‘ve been up, down almost to the ground. Then as Vickie’s voice rises to a Pentecostal style crescendo, she says “long as I got Jesus, long as I got King Jesus, long long long as I got King Jesus, I don’t need nobody else”.
Do you know what Vickie is talking about? Have you ever been lied on, cheated, talked about, and mistreated? Do you know anyone who never properly dealt with their daddy issues which resulted in feelings of inadequacy and rejection showing up in your interaction with them? Or maybe you have had a loved one with a lot of demands on their life. But instead of leaving the stress on the front porch, they brought it into the house and took it out on you.
Joseph can testify to this. His brothers despised him. Why? Because their father, Jacob, openly favored Joseph over them. From the barbershop to the hair salon, everybody knew it. For He gave Joseph this elongated multi-colored long sleeve robe that signified Joseph's prominence in his heart and in the family.
To make matters worse, Joseph had this dream that his brothers would bow down to him one day that he naively shared with them. As you can imagine, that further infuriated his older brothers.
But instead of calling a family meeting and expressing their displeasure or seeking wise counsel, they decided to get rid of Joseph. At first, they talk about killing him. Then with the help of Reuben, the oldest son, they changed their minds and tossed him into a pit. Then they see an opportunity to make some money, so they pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him to their cousins, the Ishmaelites, who were on their way to Egypt to sell their goods. When the Ishmaelites arrived in Egypt, they sold Joseph to a man by the name of Potiphar, an Egyptian Officer, the captain of the bodyguard.
Can you imagine the mental anguish that Joseph must have experienced as a foreigner sold into slavery by his very own brothers? This is not what he saw in his dream.
No, but the One who provided him with the dream, knew it would happen. And the LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. (Gen 39:2)
Against all odds, He caused Joseph to succeed amongst a group of people who considered him inferior. Joseph had King Jesus!!! So, he did not need anybody else!!!
In the midst of the trials that threaten our dreams and purpose, He will be with us also. For He has not called and equipped us for a particular purpose to abandon us when hard times arise.
It does not matter what our haters do. For just as long as we've got King Jesus, we don't need nobody else!!!
