We Make Time For What We Treasure

Have you ever been to church and felt like the speaker was talking to you and you only?  Like the pastor had placed a camera in your house and then decided to share their findings with the world.

This is how I feel about some of Grammy & Stellar award winning artist Jonathan McReynolds’ songs.  They have a way of stepping onto your front porch, kicking in the door and then getting all up in your business.

For example, he has this song called “Make Room” that says “I find space for what I treasure, I make time for what I want, I choose my priorities…”

Ouch!  Does that step on your toes like it does mine?  Have you ever found yourself thinking “I don’t have time.”  I don’t have time for another long drawn out conversation about the problems in my marriage.  I don’t have time to sit down and watch a movie with my kids.  I don’t have time to check on my aging parents.  I don’t have time to eat right.  I don’t have time to exercise.  I don’t have time to read my bible, pray and fast.  I don’t have time to praise and worship the Father.  I don’t have time to serve in my local church.  I don’t have time for all of that stuff.  I have too many things to do.

But a general observation of our lives says that we have time to watch the game, hang out with the boys/girls, binge watch something on Netflix, check out the latest social media posts, etc.  Jonathan is right.  We find space for what we treasure.  We make time for what we want.  We choose our priorities.

In His sermon on the mount, Jesus says “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.  (Matthew 6:19-20)

You see that which we spend our time on represents that which we treasure.  And where our treasure is, that is where our heart will be also.  So, Jesus encourages us to seek the eternal treasures of heaven not the temporal treasures of this world.

We are to make room for His kingdom and His righteousness.  (Matthew 6:33) As Jonathan McReynolds puts it, our will, way, ego, plans, schedule, itinerary must move over so that the Father can take his rightful place on the throne room of our hearts. We choose our priorities.  We must choose to make Jesus our number one.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, as you plan and pursue your life-changing boss moves for 2023, make room for Jesus.  Chase your dreams but don’t forget about the Ultimate Treasure.  Keep the Main Thing (Yahweh), The Main Thing.
